Frequently Asked Questions

What is the function and primary application of a pilot?

Used to monitor and control upstream or downstream pressure via communication of a signal to a control valve when pressure setpoint conditions are met.

Pilots are integral within high pressure control valve packages. The control valve by itself doesn’t have a sense capability. The pilot provides this sensing capability and controls the open/close functionality of the control valve it is connected to.

In the simplest form, a pressure pilot works like the pilot integrated regulator. The same pilot plug assembly in the regulator is present in the pilot. The pilot plug assembly will adjust its position depending on the if the sense pressure is above the pressure setpoint of the pilot.

The standard configuration for pressure pilots is to be in an INDIRECT configuration. This means that supply air that is fed into the pilot is fed to the output when the sense pressure is below setpoint. As sense pressure increases above setpoint, downstream air supply decreases via venting until the sense pressure drops to setpoint.

When connected to a high-pressure control valve package, the output pressure line is connected to the actuation cavity of the bonnet of the control valve. Modulation of the output pressure allows for the control valve to adjust its position based on the value of the sense line pressure.

Indirect vs Direct is in reference to what the Output signal is doing in response to the sense signal being above the pressure setpoint.

Indirect – Sense Pressure Increases, Output Pressure Decreases

Standard setup for back pressure and pressure reducing high pressure control valve packages

In a back pressure package, air is supplied when upstream pressure is below setpoint, actively holding the valve in a CLOSED position. Once setpoint is reached, supply air is vented and the valve can open. Important because if control air is lost, the valve will fail open and prevent failure of upstream equipment.

In a pressure reducing package, air is supplied when downstream pressure is below setpoint, actively holding the valve in a OPEN position. Once setpoint is reached, supply air is vented and the valve can open. Important because if control air is lost, the valve will fail closed and prevent failure of downstream equipment.

Direct – Sense Pressure Increases, Output Pressure Increases

Nonstandard setup; possible and is usually specific to more custom needs and applications
