A free water knockout (often abbreviated FWKO) is a vessel used to separate free water from crude oil. While most Free Water Knockouts are horizontal, some manufacturers build these vessels in other of shapes and sizes to meet specific producer conditions and requirements. As the produced oil-water emulsion sits in a Free Water Knockout, the water separates and collects in the bottom portion of the vessel. The degree of separation depends on retention time, fluid density differential, and fluid temperature.
