A gas production unit (GPU) is actually two pieces of equipment joined together inside a housing. On the left is a line heater and on the right is a horizontal separator. Producers use a gas production unit to separate liquids out of their gas. It pre-heats the well stream before it comes to the choke, which is where the pressure drop and corresponding temperature drop takes place. The well stream is then heated and allowed to expand prior to entering the separator for further processing. On the separator side, liquids start dropping out, and it holds a level in the vessel. Eventually gas will move out of this vessel to a sales line, and the oil and water will be dumped downstream for sales or storage.
