How Pneumatically Operated Dump Valves Work

How Pneumatically Operated Dump Valves Work

There are two main types of pneumatically operated liquid dump valves: Pneumatically Operated Diaphragm Balanced (DB) and Pneumatically Operated Piston Balanced High Volume (LPHV).

Pneumatically Operated Diaphragm Balanced models communicate downstream pressure through the stem to the top side of the balancing diaphragm. 

Pneumatically Operated Piston Balanced High Volume (LPHV) models are the most durable solution designed specifically for highly erosive conditions such as flowback.  

Both the Diaphragm Balanced and LPHV can accept an outside supply such as compressed air or nitrogen.

This seat is reversible, meaning that when one side of the seat is compromised it can be flipped 180° and used again, doubling its lifespan. 

 

 

Advantages of LPHV dump valve

A few advantages of the LPHV model include: 

  • Wider Flow Path—When the valve is opening on the LPHV model, the ratio plug and seat lift up and out of the abrasive flow path, meaning less damage to these parts.

     
  • Angled Body—The angled body is also less likely to be eroded because there is less turbulence downstream of the valve.

     
  • Finer Control—Compared to the pneumatic diaphragm balanced model, the LPHV actuator allows for smoother operation and finer control. The ratio plug and flow characteristics of the valve also help with throttling action and allow a larger volume of fluid to pass through the trim.  

     
  • Electric Actuation option—The LPHV can be paired with the Kimray Electric Actuator, allowing producers to experience the benefits of automated and emissions-free operation.
